Academic Areas, Exam Descriptions, and Details

Students can prepare for the HESI A2 Practice Test using the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review Manual. The Review Manual contains a 25-question pre-test at the beginning of the text which helps you assess your areas of strength and weakness before using the text. Applicants can also practice on a 50-question comprehensive post-test, which is included at the back of the text and covers all the subject areas in the exam.
The questions will also include rationales for correct/incorrect answers. There is also an Evolve companion site with two comprehensive practice exams to further assist your review and preparation for the HESI Admission Assessment

Applicants may purchase this manual either from the UTRGV bookstore or directly online by following this link: Create an Evolve account which will be used on test day to access the exam. You will need to also add the HESI A2 practice test. Follow the instructions below:
HESI stands for Health Education Systems, Inc., and A2 stands for Admission Assessment. The test is also known by various other names, such as the Evolve Reach, the Evolve Reach A2, and the Evolve Reach HESI. However, most people just call it the HESI. It’s not the name important to this exam, but what it does. HESI A2 is an entrance examination. It’s a diagnostic tool, but it’s also a screening tool.

Yes, the exam must be taken by the application deadline
Yes, this institution requires a minimum cumulative score of 80%. However, a composite score of 75% and a score of 75% in the EACH section are also required. The Admissions Committee may consider the GPA average when reviewing subsections of the HESI A2 exam that are below 75%.
Per UTRGV admission policy, HESI A2 scores are valid for one year from the testing date. NOTE: A2 scores are only accepted within one calendar year of the test date.
The HESI A 2 may be taken two times during an admission period (August 1st -January 15th, January 16th –
August 1st). The most recent score will be used.
An applicant must wait 6 weeks between HESI A 2 test dates.
The applicant must re-test if the HESI A2 score is greater than 1 year old
As per UTRGV admission policy, applicants to the nursing program must achieve 75% or higher on the required individual components of the HESI Admission Assessment Exam. These components consist of English Language-Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary & knowledge, Math, Anatomy & Physiology, and Critical Thinking.
The Testing Center does not have study materials for the HESI A2 exam; however, the Evolve Reach Admission Assessment Exam Review (HESI A2) study guide can be purchased online.
Test results are available to you in the test center immediately upon completing the exam. Additionally, test scores and remediation information should be available to you online within 24 hours after completing the test. Online remediation is a free service to help you identify and work on areas to improve after taking a HESI test. After the exam, you will receive an email directing you to Evolve on the main page.
